Proactive, Not Reactive

At the beginning of this year, I was ambivalent about nurse-ins.  Having been to two alone, I didn't go into the Hollister nurse-in with a lot of hope.  But as it turned out, it was a really positive experience.  I love the way that mamas come together to support another breastfeeding mom.  In a society where breastfeeding support is sorely lacking, it's terrific that if someone is wronged, women across the country have her back.

I understand that outrage at a mother and baby's rights being denied fuels a passionate response from breastfeeding advocates.  That is as it should be.  It's why I'm here.

That reactive advocacy will only get us so far, though.  We need to be proactive.  We need to change the culture so fewer and fewer mothers face discrimination.  We can do that through legislation.  And you can do things that will have a more lasting, farther reaching effect in less time than it would take to drive to a nurse-in.  Please check out "Contact Calendars Committee" over at TXBFLeg.com to see how you can help pass legislation to improve breastfeeding law in Texas.
